"Writing Glasses"

Alexa

Caiti
During Writer's Workshop, several students were given special glasses. It was amazing to see the crazy, focused writing that happened
while wearing the glasses:)

Author's Chair

Caiti, Alexa and Marley listen to Hudson
read part of the story.

Carter calls on classmates who have a comment or
a question about his story.
The first graders have the opportunity to write stories in our Writing Center. They may work by themselves or with partners
to write and illustrate their stories. After the first graders read them to the class
during "Author's Chair," other classmates may make comments or ask questions about the stories.
Look at Mackenzie's sweet smile.

Madi is totally focused on reading her story.

Nolan S. and Prudhvi take turns reading their story.

We have been reading fairytales retold by different authors. The first graders are learning that when stories are retold, the important characters and events usually stay the same while some of the details may change.

Last week, we focused on The Billy Goats Gruff. All of the first graders created puppets and then used those puppets to retell the fairytale. Look for those puppets to come home in the next day or two.

Math Kits

Every Friday, we work in our Math Kits. The Math Kits begin at kit #1 and proceed through kit #13.  All of the Math Kits provide the first graders with extra practice on their addition and subtraction math facts. The kits' difficulty increases as students move through the kit sequence. This work time has become a class favorite.

Evan and Ivan use unifix cubes to solve their problems.
