Reading Minutes

Reading Minutes will continue to be a weekly assignment. Any time that your child is spending with books counts towards those minutes. This includes: reading “good fit” books from Book Baggies, reading library books or books from home and listening to you read to them. In fact, I strongly encourage you to continue to read to them as often as possible. This is a wonderful way to spend quality time together, as well as, model what good reading sounds like.

Star Student Awards

Many first graders have already earned Star Student Awards. Students earn these by making responsible, appropriate choices during the school day. Examples include: finding a smart seat choice during work time, writing & writing during Writer’s Workshop, organizing math tools when getting ready for a lesson, cleaning up materials and putting things away, being patient and waiting for a turn, and the list goes on and on...
When I “catch” students making these choices, I will ask them to pick up an award. Some students bring the Star Student Awards home, and some choose to adorn the inside of their locker with them.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

I enjoyed meeting with you during Parent-Teacher Conferences. Thank to all of you that were able to attend. I hope that I was able to give some insight into your child’s academic and social strengths and needs as a first grader.
